All summer, my face has been stuck in a book! I just finished Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series (I can't wait for the final installment on August 2nd!) and I'm onto Emily Griffin's books. If I could just have one whole day to myself to read, I think I'd be in heaven.

Thus, I've begun reminiscing about my childhood when I would lay sprawled in my bed, reading for the entire day - Jane Eyre, The Diary of Anne Frank, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and my all-time favorite, Little Women. I'd voraciously read through these books admiring each character for their strengths and their abilities to overcome so many struggles.

In hopes of restocking my personal library with some of these same stories, I've just discovered the Penguin Classics Deluxe Editions. These beautifully illustrated quirky lil' soft covers leave you feeling a little less guilty for judging a book by its cover.

But then again, now you'll feel a little guiltier for not having read The Three Musketeers.

The Rumor Mill: A Knitting Cafe in Downtown JC

According to a post on Wired JC, a new knitting cafe will be opening on Jersey Ave. in downtown Jersey City. The scheduled opening is for Monday, Sept. 1st!

They will be selling all things related to knitting (yarn, needles, books, etc.) and will be holding a range of classes for all skill sets, including finishing and blocking.

All right, knitted scarves all around this holiday season!

Stripped and Torn...Fabric

I am in looooooove with my bag!!!!!! It's cute, lightweight, comfortable, cute, colorful...umm cute! I don't know why but I can't stop with the stupid exclamation points!!! Cuuuute (with a slight squeal in my voice)!!!!

Anyway, let's be serious. Here are the details folks.

New from The Sak, the Reyes Batik Collection ($30 to $80 each) are environmentally friendly handbags made of recycled batik strips that are crocheted and knotted.

They've even got the details covered! The cotton lining is dyed with all-natural tea and the logo "coin" is made from coconut shell. These bags are available in three different colors: saffron, green and burnt orange, and three different shapes: the small tote, the large tote and the mini flap.

I've been carrying the small tote in burnt orange for about a week now and I have to admit I'm really happy with it. It's large and roomy and can carry a surprising amount of items - my makeup, wallet, planner, digital camera, pens, tissue, gum, an umbrella, a huuuuge pile of receipts and the list goes on.

And, since it doesn't have any metal parts (including zippers), it's really light and easy to access everything. If you worry about pickpockets (or are just into zippers), this probably isn't the bag for you. In that case, it might be a good gym bag or tote for carrying around other items that aren't as valuable. This bag will wear well over time and thanks to it's classic shapes and somewhat surprising color schemes, you probably won't get tired of it for a loooong time! When you're thinking of the environment, isn't that what matters the most?

If only it were that simple.

Long gone are the days when your loved ones could escort you to the tarmac for a tearful good-bye. Instead, you can forget about the little things, like bringing your favorite bottled beverage or wearing those comfy gel insoles. (You heard me right - those are banned too!) But, by following a few of my handy travel tips, you'll be heading to your dream destination in no time!

1. Know the Rules. Before you begin packing, please refer to the Transportation Security Administration's website, which includes a list of prohibited items and other regulations. This will save you a lot of time, heartache and money.

2. Pack it Right. In regards to the 3-1-1 rule, many skin care and cosmetics lines have created travel kits that abide by the specifications necessary to carry on your bag. (Liquids must be three ounces or less and stored in a 1-quart clear plastic zip-top bag. One bag per passenger.) Sephora.com features these airplane-approved beauty items making it even easier for you to get through security. But, if you can't part with your dermatologist-prescribed moisturizer for even a day, head to The Container Store and pick up some Nalgene leakproof plastic bottles. Remember to keep this in your purse or in the top of your carry-on bag so you don't have to rifle around to find it when going through security checkpoints.

3. Lock It Up. If you decide to check in your bags, be sure to use a TSA-approved lock so only you and security will have access to them. Also, try to make your bag standout from the inevitable sea of black luggage that will confront you at the carousel. The last thing you want is someone else picking up your bag. Use colorful tags or a simple ribbon to mark your property.

4. Stay hydrated. If you can't resist having a bottle of water with you on the plane and don't want to fork over $3 in the gift shop, pack your own water bottle in your carry-on bag. Once you've passed security, feel free to fill'er up at the water fountain. Best of all, if you buy any fragile souvenirs like shot glasses or swizzle sticks, you can wrap them in a little newspaper and store them in the bottle on your way home.

5. Pick Up the Pace. To breeze by security, first place your coat or sweater into a bin along with your shoes, belt and hat. You can shave a few minutes by pre-packing these items into your carry-on and wearing flip-flops or shoes you can easily slide on and off. Then, remove everything from your pockets, including keys and change, and put them into a smaller container. Be sure to hold onto your boarding pass and ID in case security has any questions. Next, remove your toiletries kit and place it into a bin and lay your carry-on luggage onto the conveyer belt facing up so the machines can easily scan your belongings. Last, remove your laptop, video camera and mini DVD player from it's carrying case and place the electronics in one bin and the cases into another. (In regards to iPods or other equipment, when in doubt, keep it out.) And, don't forget to keep a close eye on your belongings. A new iPod or laptop can be quite tempting to your fellow travelers!

Sometimes, my sisters put me to shame. They donate their time and the little money they get from their allowance or from random weekend jobs to make a difference in the world. They participate in river cleanups, donate their hair to locks of love, help people register to vote..

heck, one of them even volunteered at a hospice!

I try to do my part. I always try to recycle. (Okay, okay..I'm a bit of a recycling Nazi.) I donate money when I can to my old schools and I always dig around in my purse for food to give to the homeless people that I pass everyday. I hold the door when I'm walking as opposed to letting it slam in the face of the person behind me. I send my old cell phones and clothing to third world nations. Did I mention that I recycle?

Murakami x Louis Vuitton @ Brooklyn Museum

Japan's Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami will be exhibiting his mid-life retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum this weekend, April 5 til July 13, 2008.

The exhibit will show some 90 pieces of work ranging from his superflat paintings to his bigger than life sculptures as well as an animated video, all of which feature his so-cute-it'll-make you-sick characters and totally-tripped out color combos.

Takashi Murakami gained popularity in the fashion world with his art adorning the oh-so coveted Louis Vuitton bag. His first collab gave birth to the much sought after Cherry Blossom LV bags and now the much anticpated collab with artistic director of Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, comes Monogramouflage. You can see what the pop-up Louis Vuitton shop will have at the Brklyn Museum during the exhibit where the bags will be available for purchase at amounts of money that will make your wallet cry murder.

It is no wonder Murakami has also caught the eye of the Louis Vuitton book bag toting, infatuated with Japanese culture, hip-hop artist Kanye West. The artist illustrated his latest album cover 'Graduation' and in return West has preformed at Murakami's LA MOCA star-studded opening show gala back in 07; he will do a repeat performance (supposedly with special guest Jay Z) today at the Brooklyn Ball to launch the exhibits' opening. The event has already sold out, with tix costing upwards of 1k.

So for the regular Joe Shmoe, the museum will be holding an open to the public kickoff event this Saturday, April 5th with DJ Muro aka King of Diggin, and museum guests are asked to dress as anime or manga characters! Brooklyn Museum's First Saturday events will also include anime movie screenings, a dance party featuring Brooklyn-based Japanese bands Love Etc. and Sakura Madams (performing their blend of pop and rock), a gallery talk from curator Laura Mueller, and a cash bar serving beer and wine all sponsored by Target.

And if you are the lazy Shmoe and want a free peak at Murakami's work in person, just head over to the sculpture garden at 590 Madison Ave, the former IBM building, between 56th & 57th Streets and see his sculpture that was too big to fit in the museum, "Oval Buddha," which will stand 18 ½ feet tall.

Freeze - Spreading Faster Than Pinkberry

If you're anything like me, then you're addicted to YouTube! Guilty as charged - I enjoy watching otters holding hands and music videos consisting of one semester's worth of spanish. Heck, I'll even watch a betchin' muffin commercial! With thousands and thousands of spoofs, how-to instructional videos, clips and music videos, how can anyone get bored?

In recent weeks, a new performance trend called "freeze" has been spreading like wildfire. Part prank, part performance art, people gather in a public space and stop moving for a set amount of time - usually about five minutes. Earlier this winter, the first "freeze" was performed in Grand Central Station in New York City by Improv Everywhere, which according to their website is "a group that causes chaos and joy in public places."

Within weeks of having Frozen Grand Central on YouTube, "freezes" have been performed in Santa Monica, California, Quebec, London, Brussels, Paris, Edinburgh, Berlin, Stockholm, Shanghai, and Ginza, Japan! Even R.E.M. is using this as a marketing tool for their new album.

Best of all, this trend is still growing and just might hit a city near you. And thanks to YouTube, we can witness each and every "freeze" occurring in cities around the world!

Recycline, the folks that introduced recyclable toothbrushes, partnered with Evo Design to create a line of kitchen products in plenty of fun colors made of 100% recycled #5 plastic and 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Each item is dishwasher safe and recyclable in most communities. How easy is that?

I got the Preserve Colander ($13) in Berry Blue for my parents and the large Preserve Cutting Board ($15) in Apple Green for myself. I love the fact that I can be socially conscious and environmentally responsible without having to spend more than I normally would!!!

From my experience, the cutting board is fantastic! The curved handle makes it super-easy to transfer my freshly chopped veggies into my salad and has a defined "cutting" side. Although, it's a tad bit heavier than my previous board. And, like many plastic boards, this one has a tendency to move around on my counter when I'm chopping, but it's easy to fix by placing a damp dishcloth underneath.

Meatloaf, kielbas and kraut...oh my!

Once again, I can't stop talking about Sava's Polish Deli!!! I've gone about three times now and I've even brought my sister and my boyfriend. They are complete converts and we all agree that Polish food is one of our new top favorite comfort foods!

According to my boyfriend, Camloopz, "[Sava's] meatloaf is the best meatloaf I've ever had. Ever." He continues, "Yeah, you can quote me on that!"

Well there you go...

Do I really have to say anymore? After all, Camloopz is a renowned connoisseur of meatloaf. He understands the complex details and subtilies that make up a fine homemade meatloaf. No pre-made, reheated crap here folks!

Kix and Tees

Last weekend, I went to Target looking for some cereal. I'd just finished my boxes of Kashi Strawberry Fields and Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds. (I like having at least two options when it comes to my cereal.) As I weighed the pros and cons of Smart Start, Special K, and Honey Bunches of Oats with freeze dried strawberries, a box of Kix caught my eye.

My eye kept wandering the aisle and I glimpsed the Wheaties, Lucky Charms, Golden Grahams and Honey Nut Cheerios boxes. Did I just go back in time? I picked up each box and examined it thoroughly. It was pretty accurate - aside from the nutritional information of course! Everything appeared to be original, down to the sizes. These boxes were re-designed with their old 70's logos!

Best of all, each cereal was releasing a limited edition vintage T-shirt for just $5 not including s&h. Are you serious?

My boyfriend and I snagged our boxes of Golden Grahams and Kix and hauled our butts home to order two tees: Golden Grahams and Kix! (No surprise there huh?)

Home Mode for Four Dollars

I just bought a teal Arne Jacobsen Swan Chair for $4.

Unbelievable right? Well, believe it. In fact, I got two of them!

Now before you start asking how I found such a great deal, let me explain it to you.

Over the past year, I've been slowly falling in love with mid-century furniture - Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll, Isamu Noguchi, etc.

However, I'm in no place to make any furniture investments! Heck, the most expensive piece I own is a beige couch from Levitz. I even had to smash open my piggy bank to pay for it. Untill now...sort of.

Tiger Woods not a hole in one for PSP

I'm not much of a gamer. I was never into most of those popular "gamer" games (like Grand Theft Auto or Halo or Starcraft). However I do play my fair share of video games. I am really into the EA Sports games, especially the MLB series and Tiger Woods PGA Tour series. Yet despite how much I enjoy these games I do have a problem that I would like to share.

Attention to all PSP owners out there!

If you are interested in buying EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 for PSP, be warned that there are some problems with it. When you play the tournament mode and complete the first season you'll experience glitches in the game during the second season. These glitches include the game freezing upon completing certain events like the U.S. Major Championship.

You'll also find glitches when playing smaller challenges (like the Putting Frenzy or finding yourself in the middle of a lake to start off a pitching challenge). What is quite unfortunate is that these glitches limit the re-playability of the game.

It's disappointing since I was really enjoying the game. Apparently EA's beta testers didn't play the game long enough to get through to the second season to discover the glitches. As of yet, I've heard nothing about EA Sports making any effort to fix the problem. Shame on them.

So, beware of EA Sports and the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 for PSP!

For those who thought that I had abandoned you all, you're absolutely wrong! I was merely busy with work and being on my own with this baby (at least for now), I haven't had the chance to collect my thoughts so I could produce thought provoking posts.

However, I'm back with a vengeance and will prove to you that it was all worth the wait!

Last Thursday, I went to Pinkberry in the East Village with some girlfriends. We sampled their new coffee flavor, which really wasn't my cup of joe. It was tart and bitter, but may be tasty with a few toppings (like crushed Oreo's or coconut).

Then, we tasted the green tea yogurt, which I thought was really delicious! It was tart but had a subtle flavor of green tea. I'd have no problem piling on any topping on this baby!

Instead, we went traditional by ordering a plain vanilla yogurt with 3 toppings. As my sister paid, I overheard a group of girls convincing one of the guys behind the counter to give her an extra topping "rice cakes" because it was her birthday. RICE CAKES? It doesn't take much to convince him and he bends down and reaches for a clear plastic bin full of tiny white boxed shaped "rice cakes." WHAT IS THIS? I watched him as he carefully sprinkled these little candy-like jewels onto this girl's green tea yogurt already covered in strawberries and chocolate chips.

As she passes, I whip my head around and ask her, "Excuse me, what are those?" She quickly replies, "It's mochi but they call them rice cakes." My mouth drops. "Yeah, they're really good, but no one knows about them," she continues. "You have to ask them for it. Don't feel bad. It's not advertised. I only found out about them when I saw someone else order them."

Unfortunately, my sister had already ordered and our vanilla yogurt was already bearing an immense amount of toppings: chunks of strawberries, pineapples and mango.

From that point on, I was obsessed. For about 24 hours, all I could think about were those tiny little pale squares.

The following evening, after treating myself to sushi with my sister and friends, I headed over to Pinkberry on 14th St. and 6th Ave. in search of the "rice cake" topping. I immediately raced to the counter and asked, "Hi, do you have any of those rice cakes?" I waited with bated breath.

Did he know what I was talking about? Should I have explained what they looked like? Should I tell him where I saw them? I swear I saw them. I 'm not crazy.

He nodded yes.

After conferring with my sister, we decided to split a medium vanilla Pinkberry topped with strawberries, mango and "rice cakes." After all, how can you go wrong with a combo like fruit and "rice cakes?"

So, as many of you might be wondering, "How was it?"

It was pretty good! In my opinion, I would much rather call it a mochi topping. When I hear "rice cake," I think of something light and crispy. Instead, it's chewy and glutinous like traditional mochi, but not hard like a gummy candy. I couldn't detect a distinct flavor but I loved the texture. It's powdery surface and chewy middle texture hit the right note for me and broke up the monotony of the cold tart yogurt and soft sliced fruit. This topping can easily go side-by-side with fruit, crushed Oreo's, chocolate chips or cereal.

Even though this frozen treat is fat-free and low in calories, at $6.95 for a medium cup with 3 toppings, it's a definitely something that you can only treat yourself to once in a blue moon. But, when you've got an extra 10-spot burning a hole in your pocket, don't hesitate to drop by Pinkberry and ask the yogurt slinger behind the counter, "Got any rice cakes today?"

Tea Time!

At work, I usually start feeling sort of restless around 3 o'clock. Thirty minutes later, I'm feeling exhausted and begin to crave crap snacks. You know what I mean - chocolate bars, potato chips, soda, etc.

This is so not good.

However, I recently discovered a fantastic new snack that's absolutely delicious, satisfies my sweet tooth and gives me healthy skin.

Say what?

You heard me. I'm talking about Luna Organic Tea Cakes. They're made with antioxidant-rich teas and other USDA certified organic ingredients. A healthy treat that offers you clear skin and tastes good? I'm in heaven.

So far, I've only had the opportunity to try Orange Blossom, which is made with white tea from The Republic of Tea, one of my favorite tea companies. Each package contains two scrumptious white tea-infused bars. They're sweet, chewy and the perfect snack to fight off any of the lethargy that comes from being cooped up in an office all day. And, if the other two flavors, Berry Pomegranate and Vanilla Macadamia, are anything like Orange Blossom, then they'll be just as tasty and just as satisfying.

And, what would be the perfect drink to go with this delectable treat? Uhh, I don't know. It seems pretty obvious to me. Have a cup of tea and let's call it a day.

How Many Hours Does It Take to Make a Good Cup of Joe?

According to Starbucks, it's three hours!

Today, Feb. 26th, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, every single Starbucks location in the U.S. (nearly 7,100) will be closed. They will be re-training their employees on how to brew the perfect shot of espresso, steam milk to order and finally get our customized drinks correct! (Yes, I said soy milk, NOT skim milk!!!) Standards have been slipping for several years now and I'm glad to hear that the company is finally doing something about it.

The big question on everyone's mind is..."Where will I go for coffee between 5:30 and 8:30 pm?"

My obvious suggestions are:

Dunkin' Donuts (can't beat 99 cent espressos, cappuccinos and lattes), Seattle's Best, Chock Full o' Nuts, your local mom and pop coffee shops...

I don't know. Home? If I was out of work and could go anywhere, I'd just go home and sip some tea or coffee from the comfort of my couch.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of PATH train service between New Jersey and New York, anyone riding PATH trains Monday between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. can forgo the regular $1.50 fee and ride free.

In addition, free vouchers for SmartLink cards will be distributed at all 13 PATH stations.

Today, nearly 240,000 people ride PATH trains each day. Originally operated by the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad, the system was purchased by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from the bankrupted railroad in the 1960s and was re named the Port Authority Trans-Hudson.

The free rides are intended in part to promote the Port Authority's planned multibillion-dollar expansion, which includes replacing and adding to the fleet of rail cars and upgrading all PATH stations.

Overall, the 10-year project is expected to increase capacity by 25 percent, according to Port Authority officials.

Live From the Oscars...While Sitting on My Couch

I'm currently watching E!'s live coverage of the Oscars' red carpet.

Gosh, I am so enamoured by how glamorous Hollywood seems to be on this special night. I figured since I'm at home on my couch watching, I might as well blog during it and write out my instant reactions to the gowns and tuxes.

Paul Dano - Very handsome! I've been a fan of his ever since The Girl Next Door with Emile Hirsch. Loved him even more in Little Miss Sunshine.

Colin Farrell - As always, he looks really dirty. Couldn't he trim that messy mop on his head?

Cameron Diaz - She bugs me to no degree. I honestly don't know why she gets paid so much. And, from the little I could see of her dress, I liked it, very pretty in pink. Although, I'm still looking for that quirkly little detail that she adds to every red carpet dress.

Marion Cotillard - She's rocking a beautiful Jean Paul Gaultier gown. I'm loving the white, ethereal fish scale effect it has. And her hair is just lovely - very 1920's. She's got a beautiful figure!

John Travolta - Is his hair line receding? I'm finding his haircut too short and not very flattering.

Kelly Preston - I like that she went in a different direction with an orange tube gown.

Katherine Heigl - Lady in red! The single shoulder, asymetrical look is really working for her. And the loose blond curls are so pretty and fun! Does anyone else remember her in the movie My Father the Hero?

Cate Blanchett - Ahhhhh, one of the most beautiful pregnant women at the Oscars. And I'm enjoying her in the gold and deep purple dress with the large gold necklace, which isn't as overwhelming as you'd think.

Heidi Klum - Gorgeous and very theatrical with the high red-collared dress. She reminds me of a Barbie doll actually.

Miley Cyrus - She looks very appropriate for a 15 year old girl on the red carpet. Full length gown with a youthful ponytail...and in Valentino! Why am I not wearing Valentino? I'm just glad that she's attending with her mother. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she won't end up like Lindsay Lohan.

Johnny Depp - Doesn't even matter what he wears anymore. He's an awesome actor and an awesome guy. Oh Sweeney Todd!

Calista Flockhart - She always looks like she could use a sandwich. But I think it's great that she's still going strong with long time beau, Harrison Ford.

Jennifer Garner - Whoa, did anyone see Gary Busey practically molest her? He kissed her on her neck?!?! Could he be weirder? But back to the dress, it's dark, simple and safe. She looks great in her ruched, black gown and apparently, was styled by Rachel Zoe. I think without Zoe's help, she'd look even plainer.

Helen Mirren - How great is she? At first, I didn't think I liked her gown but after a minute, it really grew on me. It's very age appropriate and one of the few gowns with sleeves. A red dress with shiny silver sleeves sounds like it might be too much but for some reason it totally works on her.

Tilda Swinton - The prettiest velvet black trash bag at the Oscars! Isn't she always voted one of the worst dressed?

Viggo Mortensen - Cool guy. He brought his neice to the awards! I'm loving the grey in his hair but I wish he had shaved or trimmed up his beard a little more. I think the first film I saw him in was The Perfect Murder with Michael Douglass and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Keri Russell - She looks lovely, very pulled together. However, I'm not satisfied with the fit, espcially around her chest. It's sort of squishing her around her chest and you can see the folds underneath her arms. Not very flattering. Awww Felicity...

Laura Linney - She always plays it safe - very simple and classic in a black (or is it navy blue?) tube dress gown! Nothing she wears ever excites me. But her acting chops must make half of Hollywood jealous with envy.

Penelope Cruz - Hmm...I could have sworn she's worn something like this before. Pretty but ehhh...

Ellen Page - Happy 21st birthday! She seems very intelligent and very real. She lacks the airs and snobbery that come with being a part of young Hollywood. Her style is lacking a bit but being 21, I'm sure she's still forming that part of her personal identity.

Hilary Swank - In Versace once again! Part of me thinks that she decides to wear their designs because of Versace's legacy of being so sexy and feminine. Plus, it off sets her strong, and some might say masculine, features.

The Rock - I'm a huge fan and he's clean cut and handsome as always. I kind of wonder why he was invited this evening though.

Amy Adams - She looks lovely in her deep green dress and I'm in love with the gold Art Deco-style purse. She gentle wave in her hair complete her 1920's look. Can someone buy me the gold earrings that she's wearing? Because they're just fabulous. I'm enchanted with this little junebug. Can't wait to hear her sing tonight!

Jennifer Hudson - I'm loving her bangs! And, she looks better than she did when she won her Oscar. Last year's brown bolero number (styled by VOGUE's Andre Leon Talley) was a big mistake. This year, her white gown with the beautiful criss-cross detail shows off her gorgeous, curvy body. What's next for Ms. Hudson? SEX IN THE CITY!!!

Anne Hatheway - I'm loving her in that crisp, rose red color, and that matching lip hits just the right note for me. How glam!

Jessica Alba - Another lovely pregnant woman on the carpet! She's in her third trimester and I'm still jealous as hell of her golden skin and her perfectly sweet disposition. I'd be miserable if I were her. For those who didn't read her People magazine article from a few weeks ago, she went from a B to a D cup...and they aren't even sagging. No fair.

George Clooney - Handsome, witty, funny...He's totally tapped into Danny Ocean once again in his dash and dapper tuxedo.

Julie Christie - She looks like a star and I think, tonight's winner. But I'm really not feeling her pink gloves.

I'm off to watch the show and hopefully, I make it all the way through the awards.

Let's Talk Food

I like reading blogs. Sometimes, I just like looking at pictures and reading random captions. I get very entertained by the meandering minds of people I don't know.

You might feel the same way as I do.

Occassionally, I run into some amazing blogs after going through a maze of random clicks. I found one today in this same manner.

Somehow, I came across a food blog called Eating in Translation, which covers over a thousand restaurants, cafes, lunch counters, food carts, grease trucks, fairs, festivals, grocers and green markets in NYC and the surrounding areas. Heck, when I say surrounding areas, I'm including Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh City and Jersey City.

Say what?

Yes, I'm doing another blog on good ol' Jersey City. Eating in Translation includes a special section on Jersey City hotspots.

They cover personal favorites like: Phil-Am, Philippine Bread House, Nha Trang Place, Fiesta Grill, and Steven's Market Cho Saigon.

With this handy little guide, I'm planning to make some stops at places I've heard were great holes in the wall restaurants that offered excellent food and service, like Dosa Hut, Calle Luna, Kineret, and Ibby's Falafel.

However, up next in my own personal "eating in translation" experience is Sava Polish Deli in downtown Jersey City. It's known for having delicious and affordable homemade Polish dishes, including kielbasa, kraut, and my personal favorite, pierogies! Don't forget to to try the Hungarian gulash or the Ukranian borscht!!!

Apparently, this place is so good that fans of the restaurant are trying to help the owner, Jadwiga, get the word out about this family-owned business. With prices for everything from gas to wheat going up, I'm sure she could use all the help in keeping her business alive. Her website was entirely built by a Sava customer and many others hope to print up flyers to distribute to the local area.

Seriously, if you're craving some stick to your bones meat and potatoes, give me a call and let's head over to Sava's. Apparently, from time to time, they serve fresh cheese blintzes and cream cheese cookies!

Coachella Heads East!

Yes, you heard me right. The good folks that organize Coachella year in and year out are holding the East Coast version in my hometown of Jersey City! The three-day All Points West Music and Arts Festival will take place from August 8-10 in Liberty State Park. Tickets are $89 per day and $258 for all three days. Tickets go on sale on Feb. 29th via Ticketmaster.

Radiohead will be headlining on Friday and Saturday, which will be the band's only tour dates in NYC. Jack Johnson will be headlining the final evening of the festival. A total of 40 bands will cover three different stages during the festival, allowing for each band to have longer sets.

And, organizers are planning to keep the festivities fairly small, about half the size of California's Coachella. They will be capping attendance to about 30 to 40 thousand people. Some proceeds will benefit Friends of Liberty State Park, a volunteer open-space advocacy organization.

Best of all, arrangements with Amtrak is being set up to create a special stop for the festival and on-site parking will be reserved for carpoolers only. Therefore, the park's grounds will be accessible by car, bus, ferry and train!

Other performers slated to play include Cat Power, Animal Collective, the New Pornographers, Girl Talk, the Roots, Underworld, the Go! Team, Metric, CSS, Andrew Bird, Black Kids, Chromeo, Amadou & Mariam, Rogue Wave, and Mates of State.

Dude, I am so psyched about this! Anyone else want to go with me?

We So Love Colors

The other day, I was thinking about how amazing 80's fashion was! And, I'm not talking shoulder pads and running sneakers with suits! Sure, Working Girl was great and all, but I'm talking neon green tutus and acid-washed jean jackets!

Having been born in 1982, I was a little too young for many of these trends (i.e. Madonna's "Like a Virgin" white lace look and high heels with scrunch socks), but for some strange reason, I still yearn for those days. C'mon, who doesn't want to rock hot pink tights with a Gem T-shirt?

And, with the 80's back in style, there's nothing to stop me now! ("No, I am totally going to the New Kids reunion concert, Mom! I love Joey McIntyre and I'm gonna marry him!")

In all my giddiness, I started looking high and low for a website that might have a decent selection of tights in the absolute craziest colors and patterns. At first, I came up with nothing - lots of black, brown, grey and navy. Then, I came upon We Love Colors. They stock everything from polka dots to tie-dyed tights to your basic solids in 45 different shades! And, they don't limit themselves to just women and children. They even have a selection of tights for men!

During my journey searching for colorful tights, I ran into some other 80's accessories that are near and dear to my heart: leg warmers, stirrups and knee-high tube socks. American Apparel, a sweatshop-free manufacturer carries them in a plethora of colors.

Now, if only I could find one of those plastic T-shirt clips! Am I the only one that remembers those things?!?!

Siblings: Allies or Rivals?

I'm the oldest of three children - all girls. Today's big question is - Were we born to be allies...or rivals? Nosh on that quandary.

In my personal opinion, it's a little bit of both. Sure, if you have a sibling of the other gender, you'll still feel competitive, but it's nothing like having a sibling of the same gender. Who has better grades? Who plays the piano better? Who's taller? Who's prettier? Who had better SAT scores? Who has the better job? Often, this sort of thing may never end amongst siblings.

What do you think?

Besides being your ultimate nemesis, a sibling can be the greatest blessing in your life - an automatic friend, ally and confidant. I honestly don't know what it would be like not to have either of my little sisters. We're all pretty different but over the years, I've noticed that we understand each other on a level that most of my closest friends may never really get. And no matter how much they may test my patience or my capacity to love them, I've still got their backs.

Soap or Candy?

Nope, not many of us have to ask this question while we shower. Usually, we go about this tedious task doing the same hum drum routine, until now...

Last week, I discovered Lush's solid shampoo! Where the heck have I been?

They come in several delightful flavors...um...I mean scents and when you purchase two, you get an adorable silver tin to store one in between showers! Best of all, these shampoos require no preservatives or packaging and will last much longer than your average bottle of shampoo! (Whoever thought that being eco couldn't be fun and chic was obviously unimaginative!)

Their two latest solids are Cinnamon and Squeaky Green, which are both SLS-free. Much controversy surrounds the possible dangers of sodium lauryl sulfate, but with Lush's long history of producing natural and organic products (since 1978 in fact), no one will have to worry about these babies!

Remember Bowl Cuts?

When I was little, my mom and dad would cut my hair. They'd seat me on a big wooden chair in the foyer right by our front door. With a spray bottle in one hand and a comb in the other, they'd prep me for the first big cut. We didn't have a mirror nearby so I was always nervous throughout the experience. Snip..snip..snip..

"Are my bangs even?"

"Are they too short?"

"What if they shrink when they dry?"

Finally, after 10 minutes of my parents moving my head from side to side and re-combing my bangs over and over again, they let me run into the bathroom to look at my new 'do. As I switched the light on and tiptoed to look into the mirror, I'd see my new haircut. It wasn't perfect and my bangs weren't as straight as I would have liked, but I smiled anyway and slipped on my favorite flowery pink headband.

As my parents swept my hair off the floor, I ran down my front steps to join my sisters for a day full of playing. Ahhh, the Saturdays of my youth!!!

Was V-Day Invented by the Companies?

I've had a love-hate-love-hate-hate even more-love-love relationship with this "holiday."

(Do you notice the quotation marks surrounding the word holiday?)

Anyway, I did a quick search (thank you Mr. Google) and found some staggering statistics.

190 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually.

Valentine’s Day is the second-most popular holiday for giving greeting cards. (This excludes the packaged valentines a lá elementary school, which are designed for kids to exchange with each other.)

Nearly 50 percent of all Valentine’s Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to February 14th. Procrastinators unite!

About 40 percent of all Valentine's Day cards are purchased by parents. (Uhhh...thanks Mom!)

And, little did I know, apparently Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, Italy and the United States.

In the 1840s, Esther Howland, a native of Massachusetts, began selling the nation’s first mass-produced valentine cards. She certainly wasn't a company, but then again, she started the ball rolling.

According to legend, Valentine’s Day commemorated the anniversary of the death of St. Valentine, a Roman clergyman who was executed on Feb. 14, about 270 A.D., for secretly marrying couples in defiance of the emperor. And ccording to another, the holiday began as a Roman fertility festival. Americans probably began exchanging handmade valentines in the early 1700s.

For those who celebrate this joyous "holiday," I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day. And, for those who prefer to treat today like any other day of the week, go you! Have an awesome Thursday!

Guerillas are For Kids

I tend to read several books all at the same time, which I hear isn't all that unusual. One of my recent acquisitions is The Guerilla Art Kit by author and illustrator, Keri Smith.

After looking through her book, it made me realize that these simple acts of defiance could change more than just my day, but the world around me. Everyday, I pass this convenience store/ deli that has a huge cardboard cut out of a guy holding a blank sign over his face. Instead of announcing how much you could win if you played the lottery that day ("a dollar and a dream"), there's a huge penis drawn over the area that would be his mouth. For some reason, it irks me. I can't help but think, "Eww, you ruined my day." I wonder if anyone else thinks this.

With this kit, I can have a similar effect, but in a positive way. I can send out messages that are really meaningful to me ("Recycling is fun!") or just try to make someone smile. It's the ultimate pay it forward book. Mail out random postcards to friends or strangers. Toss a handful of flower seeds into an empty lot and watch them grow. Use chalk to write random thoughts or to draw little cartoons on the sidewalk. Who knows whose day you've just made a little better?

This whole idea reminds me of Daniel Powter's song, Bad Day, and its music video (featuring one of my favorite actresses, Samaire Armstrong).

If only I could draw...

and didn't have a boyfriend.

If you're a JC local, I'm sure you'll be interested to find out that the Central Avenue SID Management Corp. is holding the first annual Everything Jersey City Festival this May. Come one, come all!

There will be two stages with music and entertainment, demonstrations from local dance troupes, martial arts schools and public safety officials, plenty of rides and activities for the little ones and best of all, hundreds of exhibitors (artists, crafters, local businesses, etc).

If you want to try selling some deep fried Oreo cookies or homemade quilts, go to the website to find out more information. According to them: "In the festival's first year, vendor spaces in all categories will be available at very a reasonable introductory rate."

Oh great. Now I'm dreaming of an Oreo cookie enrobed in a coating of sweet, crispy batter and sugar. Maybe I'll go nosh on a banana or something...

Are You a MUJI-aholic?

I'm sure many of you will be excited to know that MUJI, the Japanese design shop, will be opening it's first U.S. flagship store in New York City this spring. Located in midtown Manhattan in the recently opened New York Times Building (along 40th St. and 8th Ave.), MUJI will be making a big statement. At 5,000 square feet, MUJI-aholics will hopefully be satiated with the wider selection of home goods, office supplies, furniture and clothing.

Although several of their products are already available at the Museum of Modern Art and in their MUJI Soho location, Americans have only been exposed to a small portion of their earth-friendly, high design products. Many of the items that we're unfamiliar with are practical and useful, like a folding bicycle or a compact washing machine or breakfast cereal. (Who knew?) Up until this point, one of their coolest and most innovative products has been the cardboard speakers. Although very unique and eco-friendly, it still rubs me as being mildly kitchy and somewhat un-realistic for some folks (i.e. tech-heads, etc).

And, while their products are chic, yet simple, I'm really excited by the fact that their items are completely brand-less. Instead of turning their products into mini billboards, they let its sleek design and everyday usefulness speak for themselves.

Out With the Old, In With the New

For the past few weeks, I've been focused on trying to make the most of my 495 square foot apartment. I've been living in this tiny studio in downtown Jersey City with my boyfriend for about two years. And, in all that time, we've been putting up with hand me down furniture and random cheap-y finds on Craigslist.com, much of which we don't particularly love. Finally, I think we're ready to take the plunge to find a few items that actually express our personalities and make us feel like we're livin' large.

I recently procured this deep brown faux-leather storage ottoman from Target for $80.

It does quadruple duty by serving as an ottoman where we can rest our tootsies after a long day at work, as storage for our huge collection of board games, as seating for when we have guests, and as a tv dinner table for when we feel like snacking. Best of all, it gives our living room a new flow that was impossible without it. Before, it was just a huge space that needed filling, which is why I probably let clutter collect on the floor. With this piece of furniture firmly planted between the tv and the sofa, it's created boundaries that make it more inviting and functional.

Hopefully, my "apartment mode" keeps going strong!
